Tips for Optimal Blog Design
The design of your blog is essential for delivering awareness and understanding of your company and brand.
Your company’s blog is an important part of your content-marketing plan. While regular updates with quality content are essential to a blog that hits your targets, the design and appearance of your blog makes a big difference as well.
After all, you don’t want to waste good content on bad formatting. Here are a few tips:
- Maintain Consistency: Throughout your site, you should use consistent colors, formatting, and typography. To ensure you further your brand and look professional, these should marry well with—or match—the colors, fonts, and formats you specify in your company's brand guide.
- Typography: No more than two typefaces should be used on the site and these should be able to be translated into several weights. It is recommended that you use a standard font that people can read across all devices.
- Colors: Your site should not use more than three colors for its buttons, headers, and theme. If there is something that your reader needs to click on, this should be in a brighter color.
- Use Great Images: Teavana's blog is a great example of using imagery to create a mood and environment that furthers its brand. On its blog, the company uses high quality, bright images that engage the senses and promote the aura of tea drinking.
- Link to Your Site: A prominent link to your Web site is a must. Always link to your company’s main Web site within the blog template and within posts when the context makes sense. Also, whenever possible in a post, link back to your blog’s previous relevant posts.
- Line Height: Use generous amounts of line height, as this is easier to read on a screen.
- Avoid Java: Sorry about this one, but it’s a fact: Java script can do great things, but many computers cannot support it.
- Break up Content: Big walls of text are not inviting to read—no matter how interesting the content. Short paragraphs, quotes, bulleted lists, and subheaders make blog posts easier to read.
